Research progress of Nrf2 transcription factor in inflammatory bowel disease and its complications
Journal Title: Journal of Air Force Medical University - Year 2023, Vol 44, Issue 5
Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease ( IBD) is a chronic, recurrent, nonspecific inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract, including ulcerative colitis and Crohns disease, with an increasing incidence year by year. At present, the pathogenesis of IBD is not clear, and it is prone to cause serious complications, such as intestinal fibrosis and colorectal cancer. Treatment drugs for IBD include antibiotics, glucocorticoids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, biologics, and immunosuppressants. However, there are many adverse reactions and the efficacy of these drugs in severe patients is limited. Nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) plays a key role in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory responses. Multiple studies have confirmed that Nrf2 can regulate the outcome of IBD and its complications. This paper reviews the research progress of Nrf2 in IBD, so as to provide new enlightenments for exploring therapeutic targets of IBD to reduce its complications.
