Journal Title: JOURNAL OF FUNCTIONAL VENTILATION AND PULMONOLOGY - Year 2017, Vol 8, Issue 23
Abstract
The prevalence and incidence of obesity has increased dramatically over the last thirty years. Besides metabolic, musculoskeletal and cardiovascular complications, obesity causes, on the respiratory level, a restrictive disorder, changes in ventilatory mechanics and an alteration of respiratory drive. Apart from the obesity hypoventilation syndrome, obesity is associated with other respiratory diseases, namely, obstructive sleep apnea, asthma, pulmonary vascular diseases and other respiratory complications. All this recommends the need for the practitioner, to investigate any respiratory symptoms in the obese patient, and represents a new challenge for health systems in term to provide healthcare resourses and more particularly support ventilation device for respiratory failure. Through this article we review the physiopathology of lung disease in obesity and various pathological aspects of this entity generally unknown.
