Retrospective Review of Ukrainian Culture of the Second Half of the 20th Century

Abstract

The article touches upon the fundamental concepts and aspects of the development of Ukrainian culture in the second half of the 20th century. It also covers the processes of its decline as well as the national and cultural Renaissance. The article describes the activities that enable to get oriented in the problems of Ukrainian culture and art. At the same time, the author lays stress on the comprehensive approach to characterizing the landmark achievements of the Ukrainian people’s culture throughout the continuous battle for the national independence and own statehood. The article analyses the humanistic content of Ukrainian culture, its significance for creative self-consciousness of many generations of Ukraine people in the national self-development and world civilization, which caused its objective transformation into a comprehensive hole of the spiritual world of the Ukrainians. The article provides a review of numerous scientific researches by S. D. Bezklubenko, O. M. Berehova, S. S Volkova, V. M. Sheiko, V. M. Aleksandrov, I. M. Iudkin and B. A. Holovko. Based on their publications, the article covers and analyses the peculiarities of Ukrainian culture to enable our generation to learn about its origins and evolutionary processes. This research emphasizes the universal nature of cultural values, reveals the historical limitations of the narrow class based and partisan political approach to such a complex sociohistorical phenomenon as culture. At the same time, history of Ukrainian culture of the second half of the 20th century is seen through the prism of the national and cultural Renaissance unfolding in the Ukrainian lands. The study of this material is intended to enrich man’s spiritual experience with the knowledge of the history of the native culture, build self-esteem as citizens of new, independent, democratic Ukraine. Ukrainian culture of the second half of the 20th century is a difficult path of evolutionary growth, losses and gains. This is our history, which is subject to study, analysis, critical appraisal, and, the main thing, to understanding and admiring its highest values.
