Rola transportu publicznego w kształtowaniu miasta przyjaznego osobom starszym

Abstract
The article discusses the role of urban public transport in shaping of an age-friendly city for older people, 65 years and over. The World Health Organization (WHO) has named transport as one of the 8 key areas for the functioning of an age-friendly city. The paper analyzes the role of the urban transport system in the existing programs of assessing the quality of life in the city. It also examines the importance of such criteria as accessibility of transport, including the significance of the distance to the bus stop and the vehicles’ constructional parameters which facilitate their use by the elderly. Basing on the analysis of the various factors that contribute to the creation of an age-friendly city, the paper argues that the 2001 recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) make an important contribution to the role of urban public transport and show which measures should be taken to improve its accessibility to senior citizen as well as other age groups.
