ROLE OF CANNABINOIDS ON PROCESSING SPEED OF SCHIZOPHRENIA PATIENTS: A INDOOR BASED CROSSECTIONAL AND COMPARATIVE STUDY
Journal Title: The Odisha Journal of Psychiatry - Year 2013, Vol 20, Issue 1
Abstract
Rates of substance use disorders among individuals with schizophrenia are higher and cannabis is the most commonly abused illicit drug. Despite the controversy related to the causal relationship between CUD and 5Z, several lines of research suggest that 5Z patients with comorbid CUD may represent a clinically distinct subgroup of 5Z patients. While the majority of studies examining the effects of cannabis on cognition in schizophrenia report superior cognitive functioning ,others have observed poorer cognitive performance or fail to find a difference in some cognitive tasks when comparing patterns of cannabis use. Furthermore, studies conducted in otherwise healthy cannabis users report either poorer neuropsychological functioning or observe comparable cognitive performance between users and non users. These -findings suggest that cannabis may have differential effects on a vulnerable schizophrenia brain as compared to a healthy brain. This study was conducted in 195(N) number of enrolled patients admitted with a DSM IV TR diagnosis of schizophrenia with either nohistory of a CUD (CUD"; N=120) or a history of CUD (CUD+; N=75).Groups were initially compared on key demographic variables including sex, race, age, age at onset of 52, parental socioeconomic status, education level and global assessment of functioning. Covarying for any observed differences in demographic variables, we then compared both groups on Speed of Processing r with the help of three different tests i.e. - Category Fluency test-animal naming, Digit symbol substitution test and Trail Making A (TMT-A).It was observed thatCompared to the CUD" group the CUD+ group demonstrated significantly better performance on speed of processing.
