Premenstrual Symptoms and Quality of life – A hospital based study of working females

Abstract
Introduction - Premenstrual symptoms may adversely affect personal relationships and work productivity. The decrement in Quality of Life is more pronounced in women working in challenging professions. The study aims to evaluate the relationship between the Premenstrual Symptoms and Quality of Life amongst working females in a psychiatry hospital set up in India. Methodology - We did a cross-sectional study amongst working females in tertiary care psychiatry hospital of India. The subjects, selected through purposive sampling technique, included students, doctors, nurses and ward attendants, in reproductive age range of 20-45 years. The assessment was carried out via Retrospective Premenstrual Assessment Form and World Health Organization Quality of Life - BREF. Appropriate statistical analyses were performed. Results - 150 working females of the hospital were recruited. Quality of life suffered moderately due to pre- menstrual symptoms, with major impairments in domains of psychological health, social relationship and physical health, affecting hospital/household work. These domains correlated with symptoms of tiredness, feeling sad and hopeless, reduced sleep and appetite, mood changes and concentration problems (p<0.001). Discussion - Premenstrual symptoms significantly affect quality of life in females working in demanding professions. The impact may not be as severe as with Premenstrual Syndrome, although psychological health is significantly affected. Decline in sleep, appetite, concentration along with mood changes and sadness, during premenstrual period may indicate impairment in psychological health. Early detection of these symptoms might result in help seeking at appropriate stage, considering that poor quality of life negatively impacts work productivity.
