ROLE OF PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP) IN TREATMENT OF TENNIS ELBOW
Journal Title: National Journal of Medical and Dental Research - Year 2018, Vol 6, Issue 2
Abstract
Background: Lateral Epicondylitis is a common condition for which conventional treatment shows poor efficacy. This study evaluates the efficacy of PRP as a newer agent to treat chronic severe LE, also the complications of treatment. Case study: This is a prospective study where 30 patients with chronic severe TE were subjected to inclusion criteria to receive local injection of PRP. Pain evaluated by visual analogue scale (VAS), tenderness graded subjectively and Oxford Elbow Score was observed pre-treatment and post-treatment at 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks. Conclusion:After injection of PRP there was significant change in pre-treatment (VAS 6.7±0.907) and post-treatment (VAS 2.3±0.959 at 12 weeks follow up) pain, showing consistent recovery post injection. Majority of patients had decreased grade of tenderness with none of the patient having very severe tenderness after 12 weeks (P < 0.001). Oxford elbow score improves from mean 19 at pretreatment to 39 after 12 weeks which indicates gradual improvement of functional outcome. Patients may present with post injection pain at injection site and fever relived by conservative methods. Result:The consistent improvement with absence of recurrence strengthens the role of PRP in TE. Also the minimal complication rate advocates safety along with efficacy.
