Journal Title: International Journal of Ayurveda & Alternative Medicine - Year 2016, Vol 4, Issue 5

Abstract

Anidra (insomnia) is a common sleep disorder that affects an about 30% of the general population. It is characterized by difficulty with sleeping. This may include falling asleep, maintaining sleep or a combination of the two. It often leads to fatigue, lack of energy, difficulty in concentrating and irritability. One of the reasons that insomnia is on the rise is the high stress levels and time pressure associated with modern living. Many people complain of insomnia with stress during the day making them too tense or worried to be able to fall asleep at night. Acharya Sushruta has mentioned treatment of Anidra as Abhyang, Murdhni tail, Udwartan and Sanwahan. Apart from the above treatment here Shirodhara, a method of Murdhi tail is tried. Shirodhara, oil dripping on the forehead in a steady stream or flow is widely practiced in complementary treatment of Ayurveda. It is usually indicated to treat stress, anxiety, insomnia and to relax the nervous system. In a single case of Anidra; while doing shirodhara , symptoms like sleeplessness, headache and heaviness were observed. Shirodhara was done as method mentioned in Ayurveda text and observations taken. Duration of treatment was 10 days. The benefits of this treatment are observed as reducing symptoms of Anidra.
