Role of Thoracoscopic Biopsy in Pleural Effusion – A study of 40 cases
Journal Title: Gujarat Medical Journal - Year 2017, Vol 72, Issue 1
Abstract
Introduction : Medical thoracoscopy, in the trained hands of a pulmonologist is a safe and effective procedure for the diagnosis and therapy of multiple pleural diseases. Medical thoracoscopy should be performed on these undiagnosed patients because of its high sensitivity in malignant and tuberculous pleural effusions. That is why the last decade witnessed an overwhelming interest in thoracoscopy as a diagnostic tool for pleural diseases. This study conducted in the Department of Pulmonary Medicine, B.J.MedicalCollege, Ahmedabad, between July 2014 and November 2016. Total 40 patients underwent medical thoracoscopy for undiagnosed pleural effusions were enrolled in these study. It allows one to visualize the entire pleural surface and perform limited diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Material & Methods : Thoracoscopy was done in all 40 cases out of which 23 cases (57.5%) were positive for malignancy. Among the malignant pleural effusion the commonest histological pattern was metastatic adenocarcinoma. Diagnostic yield of thoracoscopy for pleural pathology remains very high.
