Rooted in Place: The Lived Experiences of Stayers
Journal Title: Psychology and Education: A Multidisciplinary Journal - Year 2024, Vol 19, Issue 4
Abstract
This phenomenological study discussed the experiences of stayers in Holy Trinity College (HTC) of General Santos City and the key factors that may help academic institutions build a strong and loyal teaching workforce. Colaizzi’s descriptive phenomenological method was used in identifying the phenomenon's essence. The study used semi-structured interview guide in asking the six participants, all of which are teaching personnel who rendered 15-25 years of service in HTC. Based on the results, educational institutions create a culture of loyalty and commitment that translates higher levels of productivity through paying their employees well, offering mentorship, providing professional development opportunities, challenging employees, offering opportunities for advancement, involving and valuing employees, empowering them to make decisions, and providing job security. These are the reasons why stayers remain in the institution. Additionally, by providing certain benefits to employees, an institution may also enhance their job satisfaction and retention mechanism. This may create a positive image as an employer of choice, leading to a competitive advantage in attracting and retaining employees. In conclusion, creating a supportive and engaging workplace culture that prioritizes employee development, involvement, and empowerment is essential for building a strong and loyal teaching workforce.
