Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2013, Vol 6, Issue 26
Abstract
It defines a national identity that the individuals free themselves from “the sense of me” and feel that they belong to a society by obtaining “the sense of us”. The thoughts, way of living and dreams of a nation are reflected in the literal works such as folktales and epics, and hence in the languages that compose these works. Therefore, the languages are not dissociated from the culture and the society; and they play a key role in maintaining the identity and the culture of the societies. The European societies went into the effort of creating a common identity against the threats they encountered in the history. The common ground was initially the religion in the Europe, but then it gained a political and economic aspect. Today, efforts are made to create a supra – national structure in the European Union, and it is desired that the societies of the member states should adopt a European identity instead of a national identity. Accordingly, the concept of “Unity in Diversity” emerged. While the Europe made an effort to join forces against the threats, it was aimed to divide the Turkish world with various tactics and separate the Turkish people from each other in a cultural way. In particular, the national identity in the Turkish world was distorted as a result of the use of different alphabets with the pressure of the Russians, hence the Turkish dialects diverged. In this paper, it is aimed to explain some of the activities carried out by the European societies to create a common identity, and in line with these activities, some recommendations will be made about the efforts for creating a unity of language in the Turkish world.
