Abstract

The article presents a 96-year-old history of collecting manuscripts since the establishment of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin’s Library, as well as a 56-year-old history of Manuscripts Section since 1958 in chronological order. It shows several stages of creating the collection: collecting manuscripts before World War II (1918-1939), protecting manuscripts in time of the German occupation (1939-1945), organization and activity of the Manuscripts Section before the establishment of the Manuscripts Reading Room (1945-1971), activity of Manuscripts Section after the establishment of the Manuscripts Reading Room, offi ce and storeroom (1971-2008), redevelopment of the library building and changing the Manuscripts Reading Room into the Special Collection Reading Room, creating three new offi ces destined for three sections, new hall and a storeroom (2008-2009), the activity of the Section after the establishment of the Department of Special Collections with three separate sections (The Old Books Section, The Graphical, Carthographical and Musical Collections Section and The Manuscripts Section (2007-) and digitalization of manuscripts (2014-). Moreover, the article shows current and previous problems of the activity of this section, its future prospects and how the frequency of reading manuscripts can be increased. The analysis is based mainly on Manuscripts Section of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin’s documentation since 1958 to 2014.
