Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2014, Vol 20, Issue 4

Abstract

In the last decades in many countries a rapid increase has been observed in the number of the population in older age groups. In Poland, according to the demographic prognosis, until 2035 an increase will be observed in the number of the population aged 90 and over. Old age is the main risk factor of many diseases. Frequently, many of these diseases occur at the same time, and only a low percentage of people at this age enjoy relatively good health. objective. The study population covered 500 individuals aged 90 and over from the Lublin Region. The study was conducted in 2013 by the method of an in-depth survey with the use of a questionnaire form. results. As many as 77% of respondents were single females with a low education level, mainly from the rural environment. The most frequent complaints were: cardiovascular diseases, especially hypertension (42%), IHD (37%), arrhythmia and atherosclerosis (36%), as well as disorders in blood supply to the lower extremities, diabetes, depression, asthma, and respiratory failure. The majority of respondents (72.4%) complained of chronic pain, especially concerning the spine, joints, and head; 80.7% used painkillers, 52.8% every day. Disorders of vision and hearing, urinary and stool incontinence, balance disorders and falls were commonly observed in this population. conclusions: A characteristic feature of the population at old age is comorbidity. Self-reported state of health is low. The most frequent diseases are: cardiovascular diseases, especially hypertension, arrhythmia, ischemic heart disease, as well as respiratory failure, osteoporosis and prostate diseases. The presence of geriatric problems was confirmed in this population, such as: senile depression, hearing loss, vision disorders, urinary and stool incontinence, falls and fainting. Frequent health problems at this age are pain complaints, especially concerning the spine, joints and head, as well as locomotor problems. An excessive consumption of analgesics is noteworthy.
