SELECTION AND PROCESSING OF BIOSIGNALS FOR THE TASK OF HUMAN COMMUNICATIVE FUNCTION RESTORING

Abstract

Purpose. For the task of compensation of lost or restoration of impaired human communicative function as a result of the transmitted diseases, surgical interventions or injuries of the respiratory system and vocal apparatus with the full functioning of peripheral nervous system and brain speech centers. Methodology. The principles of the system-signal concept are applied and the feasibility of selecting and processing of two biosignal groups that arise during the imple- mentation of communicative function, namely, electroencephalographic and electromyographic signals, is grounded. The first group of signals is registered from the head surface near the brain speech centers, the second group is regis- tered from the laryngeal surface near the vocal folds. Results. The structure of system of electromyographic and elec- troencephalographic signals selection is proposed. Also, the method of communicative function restoration by the re- sults of processing such biosignals is proposed. The essence of the method lies in the formation of a certain code se- quence, the elements of which characterize the presence of vowels and consonant sounds in the mindset of the spoken word. The beginning and end of the speech process is determined by the results of electroencephalographic signals processing with the subsequent allocation of sites corresponding to vowels and consonant sounds by the results of electromyographic signals processing. Originality. For the first time, for the task of the human communicative function restoring, it is proposed to select and process electroencephalographic signals, registered from the surface of the head near the brain speech centers, and electromyographic signals, registered from the laryngeal surface near the vocal folds. The results of the work confirmed the coincidence of theoretical and experimental data. Practical value. The proposed method is suitable for restoring the communicative function in people with impaired functioning of the respiratory sys- tem and the vocal apparatus, but with the preserved function of the central and peripheral nervous system and can be used for the development of specialized medical rehabilitation systems.
