SELF-EDUCATION AS A FACTOR OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS’ ADJUSTMENT TO SOCIOCULTURAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE UNIVERSITIES OF UKRAINE
Journal Title: Науковий вісник Південноукраїнського національного педагогічного університету імені К. Д. Ушинського - Year 2015, Vol 104, Issue 1
Abstract
Multiculturalism of modern higher education makes the problem of foreign students’ adjustment to new sociocultural environment acute. In any society, culture provides individuals with normative information about its values and offers guides for behavior and thoughts. International students, at first, experience a lack of such normative information and guidance regarding how to think and behave in that culture. This information vacuum often leads to a significant amount of life stress. So, the process of self-education is very important for adjustment to new cultural realities. Literature shows that studies of acculturation initially were directed at changes in the social structure, economic status, and political organization of groups. Johnson & Sandhu (2007) defined acculturation as “changes in values, and behaviors that result from sustained contact with a second culture”. Skills of self-organization and self-management are very important in the process of acculturation. So moving up from the level of direct management through co-management to the level of self-management forms a ground for effective self-education in the process of acculturation of international students. The result of moving up to the level of self-management is exteriorization of the experience obtained, which is depicted in the abilities to realize cultural norms and values, use them in everyday communication and to treat them with tolerance and respect. This forms the ground for obtaining high level of cross-cultural competence which is the basis for successful international students’ adjustment to new sociocultural environment.
