SELF-HARM AS A DEVIATION IN THE FORMATION OF A TEENAGER’S PERSONALITY

Journal Title: Наукові праці. Серія "Педагогіка" - Year 2017, Vol 303, Issue 291

Abstract

This article is research of self-harm as a negative phenomenon in the formation of a teenager’s personality. Suicide and self-injury are difficult to predict because at-risk individuals are often unable or unwilling to report their intentions. There-fore, tools to reliably assess risk without reliance on self-report are critically needed. Prior research suggests that people who engage in suicidal and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) often implicitly (i.e., outside conscious control) associate themselves with self-harm and death, indicating that self-harm-related implicit cognition may serve as a useful behavioral marker for sui-cide risk. Self-harm is a major public health issue which is substantially more common than completed suicide and a high-risk group for repetition. Despite its relatively low prevalence (i.e. 150-500/100,000), self-harm with repetition had signifi-cantly raised risk for suicide. Social support, defined in terms of the quality of perceived support from social relationships, was found to confer protection through help-seeking augmentation, and was postulated as a rescue factor which moderates stress and suicidal behaviour. However, it has received less research compared to other etiological factors in relation to self-harm. More comprehensive measures of social relationships have been suggested as important if for clarifying the role of so-cial support and social isolation in the complex phenomenon of self-harm. This study provided important evidence of replication and novel findings about implicit self-harm associations.
