Self-ligating brackets– a review of the literature

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2008, Vol 4, Issue 3

Abstract

found, that self-ligating brackets exhibited lower friction incomparison to conventionally ligated bracketsesent the results of in vivo and in vitro investigations, concerning self-ligating brackets. In vivo studies concentrated on the issue of time of treatment, ligationtime, efficiency in delivering torque and failure rate, while in studies in vitro shear bond strength and also influence of bracket design on moment production during axial rotation and frictional forces were assessed.Material and methods:a review of the literature using key-words was performed by means of PubMed-Medline and 27 articles were selected. The following key words were used: Damon, friction,self-ligating brackets. In available Polish literature(Polska Bibliografia Lekarska) such studies were not found. Results: some in vivo studies revealed shorter treatmentand chairside time and efficiency in delivering torque, when using self-ligating brackets systems. They seem also to be equally efficient in delivering torque to maxillary incisors comparing with conventional brackets in extractionand non-extraction cases. In vitro studies concentratedmainly on the issue of frictional resistance and most authors found, that self-ligating brackets exhibited lower friction in comparison to conventionally ligated brackets. Conclusion:on the basis of the presented literature review it may be concluded, that self-ligating brackets systems seem to be a promising solution, reducing a frictional resistance, which is specially important in the initial stages of treatment and in extraction cases, where the sliding mechanics is used. However their clinical implications are not totally clear, thus further studies are required.
