Self-perception and self-esteem in art high school students and general high school students – A comparative analysis
Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2015, Vol 50, Issue 8
Abstract
The study aimed to examine whether there were differences in the level of individual forms of self-consciousness and in self-esteem and its components (general, intellectual and social self-esteem) between secondary art school students and general high school students. The one-way analysis of variance carried out on a large sample (N = 676, 73% = girls) aged 15–18 (mean = 17.3 years of age) showed there were statistically significant differences between the two groups of students in the level of personal self-consciousness and reflective self-consciousness. A higher level of personal self-consciousness and reflective self-consciousness was found in the art high school students. Also, this group showed a higher level of global self-esteem, intellectual functioning, social functioning and general self-esteem as measured with the Self-Concept Inventory; however, significant differences were found only in the general self-esteem level. By contrast, the general high school students had a significantly higher level of global self-esteem as measured with the SES.
