SEMANTIC TRANSFORMATIONS IN LITERARY TRANSLATIONS

Journal Title: Мова - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue 22

Abstract

The article deals with semantic transformations in German-Russian literary translations. The author focuses on widely-recognized kinds of transformations: generalization, particularization, modulation, antonymic translation and lexical omissions and additions. The aim of the article is to find out the reasons of transformations: divergence in semantic and stylistic characteristics of vocabulary units, necessity to transform the syntactic structure of the sentence, difference in word co-occurence, valence of the verbs, gap in extralinguistic knowledge of recipients of the original text and translation, pragmatic unacceptability of literal translation or semantic redundancy of the original. The article listed the features of influence of various factors on the choice of transformative techniques by translator. The author believes that the lexicalsemantic transformations in most cases are inextricably linked to the syntactic and stylistic transformations, and gives examples of translation of art texts by German authors into Russian.
