Senatus consultum de Cn. Pisone patre (CIL II2 5.900) in Tacitov opis procesa proti Gneju Pizonu
Journal Title: Keria: Studia Latina et Graeca - Year 2016, Vol 18, Issue 2
Abstract
The paper examines the senate’s decree in the trial of Gnaeus Calpurnius Piso the Elder, who was suspected of murdering Germanicus (October 10, 19 AD) and starting a civil war. The decree has come down to us in six copies on bronze tablets, found in the Southern Spanish province of Sevilla. The circumstances of Germanicus’ death and Piso’s trial are described in some detail by Tacitus, in Books 2 and 3 of his Annals, but his narrative often departs from the ‘official’ version of events as recorded on the bronze tablets, either because of the historian’s remoteness in time or because of his writing style, which does not always observe chronological accuracy.
