Abstract

«Have cutted a window through to Europe» and thus seeking permanent intervention in European geopolitics, during the XVIII-XIX centuries Russian Empire constantly was trying to coordinate their policies with all the trends that appeared on the West. So, when in Europe after the French Revolution nation-building processes (that were organized by public) intensified, the ideologists of Russian autocracy found model of nation-forming powers expluatation in the empire interests (i.e., state itself became the organizer of the feeling formation of the Russians as nation). European civil society, «armed» with idea of the nation, struggled with institutions of their states, ensuring the latter serving their (civil) interests, while modern Russian imperial ideology brought the Russians pseudo-nation – loyal patriots of empire and autocracy. Russian historiography in said process has played an extremely important role. Leading historians of empire sought to prove with their concepts that Russia («Holy Rus») is different from the whole world that stuck in impiety, sin and revolutionary. Russia is a «righteous» land where live «righteous» people under the care of «loving», «just», «wise», «father»-tsar. However, unlimited autocracy has no alternative and only this form of government is the only fair and effective, given the peculiarities of the historical development of the Russian Empire. Russian historiography declared that state integrity and autocrated government is a guarantee of prosperity, and the experience of history had to affirm the belief that despite all the misfortunes and tragic events of the past, the empire is indestructible because it consolidating and cementing force is autocracy
