Sexual education of children and young people with mild intellectual disability as a form of communication with teachers

Journal Title: Szkoła Specjalna - Year 2016, Vol 0, Issue 3

Abstract

Both young people and adults, according to research, see the need for school sex education. Parents often feel inadequately prepared to conduct discussions about sexuality with their children. Teachers should therefore play a complementary role, which is to assist parents in this process. This is particularly important in the case of young people with mild learning disability. The purpose of this article was to verify the extent to which teachers working with young people with intellectual disabilities feel prepared to talk about sexuality and what topics concerning psychosexual sphere they talk about with young people. The study involved 64 teachers from special and integration primary schools of the Wielkopolska region. Selection of research sample was intentional. Sampling criterion consisted of the preparation of teachers in the field of education and rehabilitation of people with intellectual disabilities, and working with students with mild intellectual disability. The study was conducted with diagnostic survey using a questionnaire. The results indicate numerous difficulties in conducting honest conversations about sexuality between teachers and students with mild intellectual disability. They create concern about the quality and effectiveness of knowledge transfer in the field of sexual education for children and youth. There is therefore a justified need for education of teachers working with children with intellectual disabilities in the knowledge and skills regarding the transmission of information on sexuality.
