Social Dynamics of Ottoman Society: Akhism Organization

Abstract

The Akhi organization is an important association that influenced the public and cultural changes in Anatolia during the middle ages. Its roots depend on futuwwa traditions, mystic and moral values. The Akhi organization is a place which brings the persons with high ethical rudiments together. Ethic of the Akhi is originated from the Quran and the traditions of the Prophet. Since its very foundation Akhism, having an important place in the Ottoman cultural history, spent all its energy together the young people and craftsmen under an organization and tried to train and exalt them morally. The field of activity of the Akhi organization, which is the first vocational education institution as an organizational and community education institution, is not confined to vocational training but also included religious, moral, societal, cultural, and political functions. In this study, the role of Akhis in socio-cultural development of the Ottoman society is evaluated.
