Social Media Usage Behavior Patterns of Elderly Individuals in the Framework of Uses and Gratifications Approach

Abstract
Active internet users have been increasing in recent days. Today, the total number of internet users is around 4.54 billion. The number of social network users worldwide is 3.8 billion. With the development of technology, participants have the opportunity to listen to music, play games, make new friends, join certain groups and chat via the internet. Internet/new media, which has become indispensable for social life thanks to the rapid developments in communication technologies and the opportunities it provides; It plays an important role in sharing information, entertaining, and informing about events going on in the environment, both in the private and public spheres. The use of the internet, which is becoming more and more widespread in the global sense, contributes to the development of individuals in social and cultural areas. Social media, which enables the individual to create his own media content, to communicate with many people simultaneously and to create his own social environment and communication network, creates a global space for the individual and this area includes individuals of all ages. This research based on quantitative data, aiming to determine the social media usage motivations of elderly individuals and the relationship between various variables, was designed in the relational screening model. In the study, social media use of the elderly and their motivations for social media use were examined. In the study, it was determined that the most important social media use the motivation of the elderly individuals was to interact, while there was no difference in social media use and satisfaction motivations according to socio-demographic variables.
