Social tension and mass protests in Ukraine: difference of manifestation determinants and mechanisms

Abstract
An attempt to conceptualize the phenomenon of social tension in Ukraine by comparing its factors with determination of participation in mass protests was made in the paper. Based on the data of the Institute of Sociology of NAS of Ukraine and a company Ukrainian Sociology Service the author has traced the dynamics of determination of the social tension on the perception and intention levels and revealed the factors of participation in protest actions during the Orange Revolution and Revolution of Dignity. The use of the repressive methods has allowed revealing not only differences in determination of social tension and mass protests, but also revealing the distinct factors of certain manifestations of social tension. In particular, political efficiency and the type of respondents’ settlements are steady determinants of estimation of protest appearance probability. Political efficiency, interest to policy, participation in civil organizations, negative evaluation of the life and political situations and orientation to planned economy are the factors of readiness for taking personal part in protests. Instead, the mass political protests mainly correlated with macro-regional belonging and geopolitical orientation.
