Social unrest and riots around the payment of fshing taxes in the 17th century Catalonia

Abstract
Since the early eighteenth century, changes in Catalan maritime fshing favored the intensifcation of social conflicts around feudal fshing incomes. These taxes can be traced back to the Middle-Ages. During a long latent period of tension, fshermen practiced a series of strategies to defraud the payment. Motivated by the privileges granted by the Matrícula de Mar and the fracture of the traditional social order, fshermen’s associations tried to get rid of the tithe in various ways since 1750. But despite its weaknesses, the structures of the ancient regime did not allow their removal until the 1830s.
