Abstract
The activities of the Soviet government regarding the organization of adult education in Drohobych region of Ukraine in 1939 – 1941 are analyzed in this article. The government established a diversified system of various types of adult education institutions: schools and educational circles for the elimination of illiteracy, evening schools, professional courses and advanced training groups. This was done with a dual purpose: 1) to ensure the formation of communist consciousness among adults; 2) to prepare workers for the work in Soviet enterprises, organizations and institutions. In 1940 for all western regions of Ukraine a unified system for organizing non-literate learning was established, with clear timelines for the beginning and end of the school year. Soviet historians write that in 1940 in Drohobych region 14 600 illiterate people were taught to read and write. The authors have doubts about these conclusions. The authors have tried to determine the effectiveness of adult education. They conclude that the effectiveness of the circles for the elimination of illiteracy was minimal. The memoirs of people, who mention that the teaching of illiterates was hardly carried out, are given in this article. The creation of evening schools for adults, the organization of training courses, in special courses for the study of the Ukrainian language, is positively estimated by the author of this article.
