MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PRESS DISCOURSE

Abstract

This article deals with the analysis of the press discourse. The objective of the research is to characterize structural and linguistic features of the newspaper articles in the press discourse; to define press discourse, its functions and role as an object for interdisciplinary studies. The discourse of press is regarded as a type of social communication used to reflect, comprehend and evaluate social reality. It can be characterized through its addressee, themes, genres, lexical and stylistic means. A newspaper article is used as the unit for such analysis. The conducted research shows that the peculiar feature of the media discourse is the reciprocity between an author of the newspaper article and an addressee / reader of the article. An addressee, his interests and the background knowledge influence the choice of a topic, linguistic and stylistic means used for the coverage of the event. To write a captivating article, to have a pragmatic effect, the author should study and know his target readership as this greatly influences the choice of lexical content and stylistic means. The process of news creation in the media has the following stages: an event, its perception by a journalist, writing news, issue of the article, reader’s perception and feedback. A participation of the reader in the form of comments or feedback is regarded as a fruitful material for the study of the pragmatic effect. The following characteristic features of the media discourse were revealed: stylistic and genre diversity, the use of toponymy, neologisms, realia, proper names, professional vocabulary, pertinent and breaking news, polyphony of media discourse. A wide range of stylistic devices are employed to reach an addressee, to get him interested and involved, to cover an event for him. Another important feature of the media discourse is the news and issue structure: headings, titles, subtitles, paragraphs that make articles well-organized and easy to read. The purpose of the media discourse is to make an effect and to give evaluation to the events.
