SPECIFICITY OF THE FAMILY VERSUS MATERIALISTIC VALUE ORIENTATION IN PEOPLE WITH VARIOUS GENERATIONAL EXPERIENCES

Journal Title: Educational Psychology - Year 2013, Vol 45, Issue 3

Abstract

Abstract: The article presents research that attempted to answer the questions about the characteristics of the family environment connected with the development of a materialistic life orientation. The answer to these questions was based on the logic of the two-route model of materialistic orientation development by Kasser and colleagues (2003). The “deprivation” route was defined by economic conditions in which young people had been raised, and by mothers’ and fathers’ parental attitudes greatly responsible for satisfying the child’s essential needs. The “socialization” route, in turn, was defined, on the one hand, by parents’ attitudes, beliefs and behaviors relating to financial aspects of life, which were a – more or less materialistic – role model adopted by children in the process of socialization, and, on the other hand, by being a member of a generation growing up in diverse economic and cultural conditions. The findings showed that the fact of growing up in completely different sociocultural conditions did not result in diversified life values, including materialistic values. What was important for the development of a materialistic orientation – regardless of the generation – was mother’s materialism and her parental attitudes – especially her inconsistent attitude. Financial affluence was an additional factor that favored the development of a materialistic value orientation.
