SPINE FLEXIBILITY AND THE PREVALENCE OF THE INCREASED STIFFNESS OF SHOULDERS AND HIP JOINTS IN YOUTH FEMALE AND MALE HANDBALL PLAYERS

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2008, Vol 24, Issue 5

Abstract

Background. Flexibility is one of physical fitness components, playing an important role in human motorics as its adequate level assures proper mobility of joints, prevents contusions, improves overall agility and facilitates acquisition of specialist techniques. The goal of the paper was evaluation of spine flexibility and determination of the prevalence of an increased stiffness of shoulder and hip joints in male and female youth handball players compared to their non-training peers.Material and methods. The subjects were 47 girls and 84 boys aged 14-16 years from sports junior high schools in Silesia, training handball. All the subjects had trained for 2-5 years, twice a week. The control group consisted of 59 girls and 51 boys from the same age group. Spinal range of movement (ROM) was measured using SFTR method. In order to detect a possibly increased joint stiffness, Dega's Test, Thomas's Test and Pseudo-Lasegue Test were applied.Results. Statistically significant differences, manifesting a superior spine flexibility were noted within the range of trunk twisting, and in boys – also while leaning sideways, but not in all age groups. The mobility in the remaining planes was similar. The tests for detection of an increased stiffness of joints showed significant differences. The boys and girls training handball obtained better results during Dega's Test, Thomas's Test and Pseudo-Lasegue Test. Functional muscle shortening were significantly rarer in this group of subjects compared to the control group.Conclusions. Handball training significantly increases shoulder and hip joint mobility. Conversely, it improves spine flexibility only to a slight extent.
