Abstract

With the IPL season and the FIFA world cup coming up, there is going to be a buzz all around especially among sports lovers; with cricket and football lovers gearing up to cheer their teams to the full level of excitement. Many of us also have a craze to follow some or the other kind of sports; especially when we were actively involved in them in our graduation/post-graduation days. But somehow in many of our cases, this takes a backseat with clinical work setting in and the pressure we deal with in a day to day level. This editorial is not to emphasize the role of sports for a dentist per se, but yes it will try to focus especially on the relation between dental work and sports. The agility, technique and the power which we nurture from our books and practice sessions over the years in colleges is what the sportsmen focus on during their practice sessions which begin from not when MESSI BECAME MESSI or when BOLT BECAME BOLT, but from the very beginning. Nowadays, we think we can improvise on our abilities later on, but if a curriculum was formed it had a significance which must be realized upon. We can’t think of having a great life if we have a bad start (though it’s not impossible). Also, talent is a gift from God. But He also helps those who help themselves. Just possessing a talent is not enough. Exploiting it to its full potential and further nurturing it with the knowledge and practical applications and then applying it in our daily practices as caregivers is what is required from a dentist to be a success. Hand – eye coordination is one aspect whose importance cannot be underestimated in the dental profession. Our eyes see what our hands feel. Similarly, the sports sector involves a meticulous hand eye co-ordination along with coordination of the specified body part. Sehwag was once asked, how does he hit almost every ball so hard? The answer he gave was epic. The superstar cricketer replied “Maybe I see the ball coming 10 seconds earlier than the other players”. An anticipation of the upcoming events or the reactions is one thing which seems to be of utmost importance as a mantra of success in any field. Anticipate the upcoming opposite team’s move or the move of the bacteria in the mouth and one is bound to get astonishing results. Dhoni’s captaincy is a prime example of his anticipatory powers. Not everyone can be MESSI or BOLT is agreeable but everyone must aim for perfection from the beginning to obtain excellent results because the only difference that exists between sports and dentistry is the final result. If their result is bad, as a nation we feel bad but when a dentist does bad, not only the patient suffers a temporary or a chronic problem, but it affects the whole dental community.
