Steam trawling in Lorient (1880-1939)

Journal Title: Codrul Cosminului - Year 2011, Vol 17, Issue 2

Abstract

In France, unlike England and Germany, the steam trawling industry remained stable for a long time. In Lorient, the arrival of the steam trawling industry dates back to the end of the 19th century. How to analyse its development, main halieutic innovation, but as a lever of the port and coal development? In effect, trawling requires port improvements as well as the setting up of tide train railway links, which thus contribute to create a back country and develop coal importation. Thanks to trawling, Lorient, like La Rochelle and Saint Malo, experiences an economic renewal. In the aftermath of World War I, France urgently needs three or four specialized fishing harbours. Lorient, which offers numerous assets, benefits from the State’s mannas for the building of a gigantic port complex, which was operational in 1927: the Keroman fishing harbour, an unquestionable economic success. As soon as 1929, the steam trawler fleet is progressively replaced by motor-driven ships. On the eve of World War II, 68% of the trawlers work with a Diesel engine. A remarkable fact, the Lorient model offers the original example of the development of a steam trawling industry, precisely because the sea people didn’t play any essential role; the coal industrialists, more particularly Emile Marcesche, and the railway companies ensure the development and the rapid expansion of this new industry for the Lorient harbour.
