STEREOTYPE IMAGE OF YOUTH IN BRITISH LITERARY DISCOURSE OF THE XIX CENTURY

Abstract

The article investigates the actualization of the concept YOUTH in British literary discourse of the XIX century. The aim of the article is to describe the cognitive features of the stereotype image of YOUTH, that function in discursive fragments and reveal the existing stereotypes about youth as a social category. Different types of cognitive features are analysed according to the semantic functionality of the investigating concept. By establishing axiological meaning of stereotype image of YOUTH the axiological component of the concept YOUTH was revealed. In the proposed paper the stereotype is defined as the result of the reality interpretation produced within social cognitive models. The analysed contexts contain nominative lexemes of the concept YOUTH in the singular, plural or collective form representing predicative and attributive functions. They describe youth / young person not as a typical representative of that age group, but as a specific individual (group of people). Therefore, the description is seen in separating unexpected, biased behavioral individual-psychological characteristics. The results of the study indicate that each cognitive feature of the stereotype image is a condensation of meaning – a special accent that is put by the author on the appropriate characterization of the concept with the regard to linguistic or extralinguistic factors. Stereotype image of YOUTH is embodied with the help of subjective axiologicaly marked features. The criterion for their selection is based on both the absence of common ontological characteristics and the presence of apparent subjective axiological marking that is highlighted in a particular textual context.
