AXIOLOGICALLY MARKED COMPOUND ADJECTIVES/NOUNS WITH NEGATIVE SEMANTIZATION OF MORAL CONCEPTS EVIL AND SIN IN ENGLISH AND UKRAINIAN

Abstract

The paper is devoted to the research of axiologically marked compound nominations in the English and Ukrainian languages. Issues of axiology have been widely studied by V. V. Akulenko, T. M. Antonchenko, T. A. Kosmeda, N. D. Arutiunova, O. V. Tyschenko, T. V. Goncharova, N. V. Ivanenko, M. M. Myhalchenko etc. Axiologically marked compound adjectives/nouns with negative semantization of moral concepts EVIL and SIN have been compared according to their semantic peculiarities in the contrastive languages. The linguistic units under investigation have the same negative semantization in the compared languages for denoting ill-humoured, malevolent, sorehead, ill-famed, cunning, hypocritical, fearful, whining, vainglorious, hesitant, weak, characterless and insolent people, as well as wrong-doers, drunkards and drug users. The paper also presents axiologically marked compound adjectives/nouns with the same semantization denoting power-loving, lascivious, good-for-nothing, cruel, wicked, heavy-handed, perfidious people, double-dealers, deceivers, betrayers, idlers, villains, swindlers, prodigals and misers. Ukrainian axiologically marked compound adjectives/nouns denoting family hostility have no equivalents in the English language. Common and divergent motivations of axiological meanings in the internal and external forms of English and Ukrainian axiologically marked compound adjectives/nouns were identified in the article. This study can be intended for the use of scholars in the field of humanities and everyone who is interested in the contrastive studies. It also opens perspectives for further analysis of axiologically marked compound nominations and their occasional meanings.
