LINGUO-ETHNO-CULTURAL SYMBOLICS OF THE GARDEN PLANT NAMES IN BULGARIAN

Abstract

The paper provides an analysis of Bulgarian names of garden plants in the ethno-cultural light. We explore the functions of the plant names in terms of folk perceptions, customs and stereotypes. It is proved that ethno-lingual features of the Bulgarian names of garden plants point to their relations with other ethno-cultural objects, conceptions and phenomena. We pay a particular attention to plant names mentioned in folklore texts – lyric songs, proverbs and sayings, riddles, fairy tales etc. If necessary the etymological analysis of the names is applied. Linguo-cultural peculiarities of the Bulgarian garden plant names are discovered through studying functions of a particular name in folklore texts of different genres. The article emphasizes the necessity of complex studying Bulgarian plant names relative to the ethno-cultural heritage. The analysis of the language material reveals that garden plants names are used intensively in the Bulgarian folklore. Most of the researched nomens are notable for their anthropomorphism. Some names are associated to astronomic objects (the sky, the moon, the stars etc.). These phytonyms can be involved in different oppositions (large – small, domestic – wild, delicious – not delicious and s. o.). The garden plant names are used in ironical comparisons (in proverbs and sayings). Fruit names are representative for the folk love lyrics where they are symbols of the maiden beauty.
