EVALUATION SUBJECT AS A COMPONENT OF A HOLIDAY IMAGE IN SOVIET AND MODERN JOURNALISM

Abstract

The study of language evaluation involves paying attention not only to its nature, forming features, type, but also to whom this evaluation belongs to, i.e. to its subject. Due to this, the subject of evaluation as a part of the pragmatists in journalistic texts about the most controversial holidays March 8th and May 1st is interesting to study. The analysis involves posts in the newspaper «Komsomolets of Ukraine» (after 1944 – «Youth of Ukraine») for 1926–1950ths, as well as Ukrainian published and online publications for 2000-2015, written and published for the March 8th and May 1st holidays. This choice of holidays is due to the ambiguity of perception of them in the society: having been the most important in Soviet times, now they are seen as unnecessary Communist legacy for today’s Ukraine, although there is a part of society that supports them. Analyzing journalistic evaluation of them, we compare Soviet and modern texts, paying attention to the features of this pragmatic aspect in discourses of different types – totalitarian (Soviet) and democratic (modern). There are three types of evaluation subject in the studied texts. In the first case, the author of the text and the evaluation subject are the same, that is, the speaker is also the subject. In the second case, the evaluation subject and the speaker stand on opposite discursive positions. In the third case, there are several subjects, i.e. evaluative statements belonging to different discourses combine within a fragment. The perception of publicist evaluation of controversial holidays largely depends on the subject, which, in turn, reflects the characteristics of the discourse in which this evaluation exists.
