STRATEGIC INSTRUMENTARIUM OF ENGLISH DISCOURSE OF FITNESS CLASSES

Abstract

The contemporary cognitive-discoursive paradigm puts forward lots of debatable issues, arising within the boundaries of different discourses, both institutional and non-institutional. Among such issues scholars single out the lack of universally acceptable criteria for inventorying discoursive strategies due to the variety of communicative situations as well as the sphere of communication. The article in question deals with the problem of strategic instrumentary of English Fitness Discourse. The latter is considered to be a comparatively new type of English discourse, arising from the needs and values of the English speaking community. Within the framework of the given article, English discourse of fitness classes is defined as a variety of sport discourse, a special independent cognitive-communicative phenomenon, a relatively mild and flexible type of institutional communication, which possesses the features of person-oriented (everyday) discourse. Institutional parameters, values, intentions as well as the characteristics of the fitness classes determine communicative, cognitive and pragmatic properties of the discourse in question. Taking into account the findings of different scholars, the author attempts to work out the criteria for inventorying the strategies of English fitness discourse. The research is carried out on the basis of English fitness videos and results in systematizing the inventory of discoursive strategies and tactics. Thus, in accordance with speech acts, prevailing during the communicative intercourse at a gym, the type of the fitness-class as well as the communicative intention, verbalized in the course of the workout, the author singles out the following strategies of English fitness discourse: informativeteaching, phatic, directive, motivational-encouraging, organizational, evaluative, supervisory and suggestive.
