STRATEGIES OF DOMESTICATION AND FOREIGNIZATION IN UKRAINIAN TRANSLATIONS OF THE DYSTOPIAN STORY«ANIMAL FARM» BY GEORGE ORWELL

Abstract

The article deals with the dystopian story «Animal Farm» by George Orwell and provides comparative analysis of the domestication and foreignization strategies applied in five Ukrainian translations made by I. Shevchenko (I. Cherniatynskyi), I. Dybko, Yu. Shevchuk, O. Drozdovskyi and N. Okolitenko. The story contains a short preface written by George Orwell, where the author reveals his political outlook and attitude towards the totalitarian regime in the USSR. The fairy story presents an allegorical image of the USSR leaders suppressing the people, hiding behind the veil of socialism and pretending to bring equality and freedom to the lower classes. The theme of totalitarianism, which includes control over a personality, social tensions, censure, ideological pressure, the threat of civil wars etc., appears to be recurrent (if not dominant) in the dystopian genre and is of great value for the literary translation, as far as the language representation of the mentioned phenomena presents a volume for investigation. Special interest is given to the diversity of lexical and stylistic means of the story, used by different translators to reproduce the peculiarities of the story and to appropriately represent them in translation either with the help of domestication or foreignization translation strategy. It seems quite noticeable that «Animal Farm» was first translated into Ukrainian and the footnote written by Orwell, as far as the original version was lost, was further translated into English from the Ukrainian translation made by I. Shevchenko. Thus, the value of the article is predetermined by the translators` techniques applied to reflect the atmosphere of the fairy story «Animal Farm».
