Abstract
The article examines the problem of defending the rights of the Ukrainian language in the Russian Empire as a national and socio- political value of the Ukrainian people. Traces the peculiarities of the socio-political and legal position of the Ukrainian language of the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and the main stages of the Ukrainian „linguistic” self-awareness.
