Abstract

Kazakov M. Structural-Functional Method of Verification as an Approach to Demarcation of Science and Pseudoscience. The article proposes the reflexive method of evaluation and verification of propositions and ideas that pretend on scientific status, created by the author of the paper. To author’s mind, the proposed method can be used as one of the practical criteria of demarcation of science and pseudoscientific “knowledge”, the transformed (deformed) form of scientific knowledge, which is trying to pretend to be science. The proposed method is based, particularly, on structural approach, combined with modern paradigm of functionalism in analytical philosophy. Substantively, the proposed method is a formal model of structural-functional relations between the elements of scientific knowledge that may stand as pattern (frame) or sample in practices of evaluation of particular theories, ideas or singular propositions for their epistemic valuation for the science. The construction of the proposed model is made through the usage of formal language, based on the language of classical philosophical logic with an addition of three junctors that depict functional relations between the elements of the models, as well as the logical propositions in their connection to the epistemic unit they represent. The synthesis of structural and functional approach, to author’s mind, is caused by the necessity of reconsidering of demarcation problem, particularly – by the necessity of turning to verification procedures that should be seen as practical acts, intentionally directed to the distinguishing of scientific knowledge and the other forms of knowledge that pretend to have the scientific status, in fact being nonscientific or pseudoscientific.
