STUDIES OF OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT INVOLVING THE APPLICATION OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES
Journal Title: Role of Higher Education Institutions in Society: Challenges, Tendencies and Perspectives - Year 2013, Vol 1, Issue 2
Abstract
The subject of operations management is as important to the education of economics and business management specialists, as is the comprehension of the significance and meaning of operations management itself to the activities of organizational systems. Operations management in its methodological sense is understood as the demonstration of the capacities of practical application of quantitative methods in various spheres of enterprise activities, while using mathematical models. Having in mind the high level of integrality of operations management with other sciences, the object, targets, and tasks of the subject are increasingly complicated to define. In the author’s opinion, the subject of operations management should be defined as the methodological basis of the management of the operational system in various spheres. Since the concept of operations management is based both on theory and actual models, it is only logical to correlate theory to management science, while models should be linked to the results of operational research. With this approach, appropriate balance between theoretical teaching of the subject and practical task resolutions could be maintained. Scientific sources offer a variety of examples of practical application of the models of operations management; however, the concept of operations management as a subject of the curriculum of the schools of higher education still cannot be clearly defined. Given that the subject of operations management is often linked to the application of quantitative business decisions, the concept of operations management should be more precisely defined, teaching practice should be generalized, and informational technologies should be applied in the process of teaching. The article offers an original interpretation of the concept of operations management, gives an overview of the dynamics of the newest tendencies in operations management science and its teaching, and offers a generalized teaching knowledge involving the application of informational technologies in the process of teaching. The conclusions of the article are presented as the result of partial research: i) The subject of operations management is not strictly defined, therefore the author’s approach to the links between operations management and the subjects of quantitative methods could be considered as one of most original interpretations; ii) The research of the dynamics of operations management science and its teaching is random, since various scientific sources offer different concepts of the subject of operations management and different teaching methods; iii) The author’s knowledge shows that the attempts to establish correlation between the subjects of teaching, often maintain debatable nature due to the expansive perception of the concept of operations management, therefore the integration of subjects should be evaluated through the common grounds of the topics of certain operations and the content of other subjects.
