Study on corrosion mechanism of RH immersion tube castable

Abstract
Corrosion mechanism of RH immersion tube castable is yet to be revealed due to few studies on the reactions between RH immersion tube castable and molten slag. In this paper, according to the phase equilibrium theory and the thermomechanical theory, the mechanism of molten slag corrosion was studied by thermomechanical analysis of the reactions between the RH immersion tube castable and the molten slag. The results showed that the SiO2 powder and α-Al2O3 powder in the Al2O3-MgO castable had two-fold effects. Hence, the addition amount of Al2O3-MgO castable should be properly controlled, meanwhile, the addition of the cement binder should be minimized. The viscosity of the molten slag was changed with the chemical reactions between the compositions of the molten slag. When the slag viscosity increased, the molten slag was easy to build up onto the RH immersion tube; the slag viscosity decreased while a large number of low melting point phases arose, which made the RH immersion tube vulnerable to penetration and erosion by slag. The low melting point phases, which were generated by the reaction between the molten slag and RH immersion tube castable, melted into the slag and lead to corrosion of the RH immersion tube, while the high melting point phases built up onto the RH immersion tube.
