Study on surgical outcome and complications of lateral anal sphincterotomy in patients suffering from anal fissure

Abstract

Background- Anal fissure is an important anorectal illness. Chronic anal fissure is caused by internal sphincter spasm. Lateral internal sphincterotomy is commonly practiced surgical treatment for this condition. Methods- The present prospective study was conducted upon 43 patients with chronic anal fissure. Patients were followed up for three months to study the outcome and complications. Results- Mean age of the patients was 38.7 ± 5.3 years and 65.1% were males. Most common complain was painful defecation (90.7%). Sentinel tag was seen in 67.4% cases. 4.7% cases had incontinence and bleeding and 2.3% cases had recurrence, delayed healing and infection. Conclusion- Lateral internal sphincterotomy is safe and effective procedure for management of chronic anal fissure.
