Stylistic Peculiarities of J.-P. Sartre’s short stories.

Abstract

The article investigates the themes, problems, developed in J.-P. Sartre’s short stories, and the devices which help to provide the artistic effect. The role of symbolism, contrast and naturalistic details in creating the characters of Sartre’s stories is pointed out. The situations chosen by the author and the ways of deep psychological insight into the human nature are analyzed. J.-P Sartre describes human existence and behavior in the situations which demand making a choice and taking a decision. No matter whether the situations are extreme («The wall») or trivial («Intimacy») they become absurd in the end. The stories are built on psychoanalysis and self-analysis. Basing himself upon Sigmund Freud’s works Sartre penetrates into the dark corners of human consciousness, touches upon the subjects of crime and psychological complexes. Contrast is a basic device in all investigated stories. In «The Childhood of a Leader» and in «Intimacy» avoiding anything romantic in love-making scenes is observed. In all five stories we find rude speeches and naturalistic details. The role of symbols is especially important for getting Sartre’s messages. The symbol of «a wall» is used in two stories. In «The wall» it symbolizes the border between mental disorder and mental health. In «Erostratus» the black diamond symbolizes evil. Symbols are present in the investigated stories in abundance. The conclusion is made that the stylistic dominants of Sartre’s stories (contrast, symbolism, naturalistic details, deromantisation) help to convey the characters’ psychological states, to reveal their motivations, to provide penetration into the protagonist’s inner world.
