Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2011, Vol 4, Issue 18

Abstract

Sound harmonies which are one of the most significant features of Turkish is often regarded as the rules sorting vowels and consonants in a word. There are two types of harmony amongst the vowels in Turkish: the harmony amongst the vowels uttered as back and front according to the language situation is called as major vowel harmony / back-front harmony/palatal harmony. The harmony amongst the vowels uttered flat and rounded according to the position of lips is called as minor vowel harmony/flatness-roundness harmony/ labial harmony. Labial harmony when compared with palatal harmony has emerged and become popular in the later periods of Turkish. Labial harmony which was popular in old Turkish period has stopped its development in old Anatolian Turkish and even showed regression. The work “Saltuk-nâme” copied in XVIth century will be evaluated in terms of labial harmony in this article. This work written by Ebü’l Hayr-ı Rûmî provide important data for the development of labial harmony since it was copied after old Anatolian Turkish period. In this study, suffixes will be examined especially in terms of flatness and roundness and their formations in a text by taking into account their positions in ET and EAT will be evaluated and thus a conclusion will be reached about the development of labial harmony.
