Summer Big Brother as English Remedial Reading Program: A Phenomenological Study

Abstract

The main purpose of the study was to find out the experiences, coping mechanisms, and insights of the Summer Big Brother (SBB) teacher-volunteers in New Bataan District, Davao De Oro. This was a qualitative phenomenon that focused on the lived experiences of the teacher-volunteers of the Summer Big Brother. The ten major themes on the experiences of the SBB teacher-volunteers were below satisfactory reading performance, interest in reading activities, pupils' attendance, support from parents, insufficient time, provision of needs, insufficient reading materials, supportive colleagues, heads and stakeholders, manifestation of improvement in reading ability, and learn new reading strategies. Under the coping mechanism, the four emerging themes were: motivated by the desire of students to read well, engaged in different strategies in teaching reading, applying one-on-one tutoring, and adopting positive attitude in teaching reading were generated. For the insights of the SBB teacher-volunteers, the themes that emerged were worthwhile rewards to the volunteers, acquired additional knowledge and experience, gained more patience, self-fulfillment and satisfaction, valued the work of a teacher, adhere to the sustainability of the program, authority to support in financial and material aspects, valued the spirit of volunteerism, gained self-confidence, and proper monitoring and closed supervision from the implementor.
