SUSTAINABLE URBAN WATER MANAGEMENT: CLEANING OF THE WATER WAYS

Abstract
This paper has been developed to explore the current infrastructure of water ways, and proposed solutions to alleviate the barriers for future progress, in Surabaya. The highly-debated solution box culverts, and the expenses associated with its maintenance is ineffective. The continuous collection of debris into the water channels are due to several factors. These include, lack of infrastructure, education and regulations. Industries and households are forced, to litter as there are no alternatives currently available. Box culverts were implemented to redirect waste water flow, whilst eliminating open channel sewerage system. The process requires a substantial amount of labour during both its installation and maintenance. Without improvements, the process will remain stagnant, restricting Surabaya from further advancement. Proposed solutions below will explore, the redistribution of labour, along with introductions to new technologies. To improve the infrastructure of Surabaya, bringing it one step closer to becoming a developed cityin the ever-growing world that we live in.
