Synchrogenverter - parallel connection of synchronous generator and power converter with energy storage
Journal Title: Power Electronics and Drives - Year 2016, Vol 1, Issue 1
Abstract
Background: The paper describes novel power generation topology wherein synchronous generator have a parallel connected power electronic converter. In this arrangement synchronous generator is only source of active power and power electronic converter is source of reactive power. Such power distribution allows to increase the synchronous generator generated active power by 25%, and operate with unity power factor. Material and methods: Simulation of proposed method and topology. Results: Proposed topology results in increase of active power of the generation system, fast speed and voltage control performance and in damping of the oscillation. Conclusions: The paper presents novel topology and control of the generation system called Synchrogenverter. The Synchrogenverter consists of wound rotor synchronous generator operating as voltage source and parallel connected power electronic converter operating as current controlled voltage converter. The Synchrogenverter concept is based on control providing zero reactive current component of the synchronous generator. The zero reactive current of the synchronous generator is achieved by control system of the current controlled voltage source converter that delivers demanded by the load reactive current. When the converter is equipped in energy storage then it results in increase of active power of the generation system, fast speed and voltage control performance and in damping of the oscillation.
