Syntactic-Semantic Classification of Compound Nouns In the Language of Modern German Sport Media

Abstract

The article provides a detailed analysis of compound nouns in sports subject areas applying the syntactic-semantic classification. The composites are extracted from the newspaper and magazine texts of contemporary German sports journalism by the method of continuous sampling. Newspapers and magazines are the most popular in Germany and represent different regions of the country. The study is carried out in the structural method framework: the immediate constituent analysis, component and transformational analyses are being applied. Endo- and exocentric compounds (Boxwelt, Fußballzwerg) are determined within the framework. The characteristics of determinative compound nouns (inequality and component fixed position) and the most productive of initial and final components (Fußball-, Sport- and -spiel respectively) are described. Exocentric composites are classified with respect to their relationship with the original sentence; formations with metaphorically redefined components (Brückenspieler, Rennmonster, Trainerfuchs) – with respect to a kind of metaphor. A special type of idiomatic compound nouns in sports subject areas – the composite, one of the components of which is an estimated stereotype (Ikone, Idol, Legende, König), is specified. The study has found that endocentric compound words are more productive than exocentric ones, due to the limited possibilities of functioning of the last-mentioned.
