Synthesis and characterization of a low-molecular-weight organogelator containing anthraquinone imide

Abstract
A sugar-based organogelator containing electrochromic anthraquinone imide, N-(4-phenyl-2,3,4,6- tetraacetyl-β-D-glucosyl)- anthraquinone 2, 3-dicarboxylic imide (AGC), has been designed and synthesized. With spectroelectrochemistry measurement, it was found that the radical anion state of AGC displays intensive absorption signal in the near-infrared region of 600-1200 nm, indicating that AGC maintains the electrochromic property of anthraquinone imide. Twelve solvents with different polarity were used to evaluate the gelation ability of AGC. Four of them were found to be gelled by AGC, which were glycol, n-butanol, n-heptanol, and p-xylene, implying a novel functional organogelator was obtained.
